ASB receives palm stearin from EPD turning biodiesel from waste

ASB Biodiesel (Hong Kong) Limited (ASB) has reached an agreement with the Environmental Protection Department in regard to receiving palm stearin collected from the beaches and turning them into green fuels — biodiesel. All the profits will be donated to local green groups for supporting their work in Hong Kong.

Turning Energy from Waste

Recently, the government and the society have made joint efforts in cleaning up the beaches which are polluted by the palm stearin. “We have kept a watchful brief on the oil spill incident since it was happened. As part of the society, we would like to help the society solve the problem through turning the palm stearin into biodiesel and investing in the society,” saidMr. S.M. Cheung, the CEO of ASB. After going through technical processing in ASB, the palm stearin will be turned into biodiesel.

“Giventhe palm stearin are mixed with sand or other impurities, it is difficult to turn them into candles or soaps. However, secondary pollution would definitely occur if they are dumped into the landfill. ASB will utilise our technology and capacity to turn the palm stearin into clean and useful biodiesel,” added Mr. Cheung.

Biodiesel can ease air pollution problem

As the biggest waste oil treatment business in Hong Kong, ASB actively cooperates with over 10,000 restaurants to recycle waste oil and grease waste, turning them into low carbon fuel. Not only does the production of biodiesel recycle the waste oil but also avoid waste oil going back to the food chain, which prevents food safety problem and safeguards public health. Besides, using biodiesel instead of traditional diesel will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. “ASB can fuel every diesel engine on Hong Kong’s roads with B10 (10% blend), which is able to offset 268,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, around 3.6% of the total emitted by Hong Kong’s transport sector,”Cheung explained.

Actively promote the application of biodiesel in the society

The Hong Kong Government is promoting the application of biodiesel through carrying out B5 diesel pilot scheme and adding the requirement of mandatory use of B5 diesel in all government projects. Currently, Zero Carbon Building and oil companies are our major client. For the sake of promoting the application of biodiesel in the society, ASB will continue to work with corporates which need sustainable growth by supplying biodiesel. In the future, ASB will actively promote the application of B100 generator in order reduce the emission of pollutants as many as possible.

About ASB Biodiesel (Hong Kong) Limited

Established in 2007, ASB Biodiesel (Hong Kong) Limited’s biodiesel factory in Tseung Kwan O was opened in 2013 with the capacity to produce 100,000 tons of low-carbon transport fuel per year. Adopting advanced technology, our facility can process multiple feedstocks, including cooking oil, grease trap oil, etc. This is enough to fuel every diesel engine on Hong Kong’s roads with B10 (10% blend), which is able to offset 268,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, around 3.6% of the total emitted by Hong Kong’s transport sector.

Our fuel also meets the EN 14214 standard of the European Committee for Standardization, ASTM6751 standard of the US as well as China standard. It can be used in biodiesel engine directly.
